Street dance
Street dance is a dance style which has evolved over many years.
Its a combination of hip hop, break dancing, funk, pop and locking. Some of these styles originated from the United
States in the early 70's, are still alive and evolving.
There
are techniques which can be taught for Street dance, however Street Dance is the individuals interpretation which encourages expressionism
and develops your musicality and rhythm.
Hip Hop
Hip
hop dance is closely linked to Street Dance. Its intentions are similar and asthetically are visually linked. This
style not only gets its name from the style of movement, but the type of music played, primarily danced to hip hop music.
Hip hop dancing is evolving in many different
directions today, heavily influenced by the evolution of hip hop music and its popularity in media, surrounded by heated debates
on history and authenticity.
Musical Theatre
Musical
Theatre is one of the more difficult elements of dance. Musical theatre is a more theatrical based type of dance, combining
music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance.
This
is the birth of Muscials - this is the type of style that musicals are produced in. Examples of this styles are Fame, West
Side Story, High School Musical, Footloose etc...Not only
is an element of dance required, so is song, acting and performance. Not for the Fait Hearted!!!
Lyrical
This style of dance requires technique in order to capture the essance of
the style. Lyrical dancer's movements attempt to show the meaning of the music. Lyrical is a very passionate and emotional
dance style. It portrays certain emotions such as love, and tells a story through every movement made. Its a demanding dance
style.
Ballet
Ballet is one of the most demanding
dance there is. Its a dance style with a vocabulary of its own, French. With its precision and poise, elleganance
and passion puts this style of dance into a catagory of its own. Within the ballet technique the dancers torso is poise
is held upright, their legs and feet are turned out. This is natural for ballerinas unlike the other dance styles which are
more relaxed and free. This style of dance is strictly follwed by techniques, exams and syllabus work . This is definately
not for the faint hearted!!
Jazz
Jazz
has evolved from other dance styles including ballet. You will find that terminology will cross over for certain dance
steps. However the feeling and appearance is very different.
One
thing that differentiates the two styles is that jazz movements are more grounded and the leg and feet work in parallel,
where are ballet is more upright and positioned. The basis for jazz music and dance concentrates on rhythm, syncopation
and style, making it dynamical and theatrical to watch.
